For the fourth consecutive year, we are participating in the young Zurich art fair ART SALON ZURICH, once again presenting a diverse program of international artists. 
Heavy iron sculptures by our Catalan sculptor <a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/artists/samuel-salcedo">Samuel Salcedo (ES)</a> stand alongside delicate busts of women by <a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/artists/gerard-mas">Gerard Mas (ES)</a>, inspired by early Renaissance portraiture. 
The sculptures are flanked by two artistic positions that deal with the image surface in very different ways—<a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/artists/dirk-salz">Dirk Salz (DE)</a> with his perfectly executed, shiny, and auratic-looking color object panels, and <a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/artists/sander-reijgers">Sander Reijgers (NL)</a> with his enigmatic surface structures, which are applied to the image carrier in a fascinating way. 
<a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/artists/johannes-kersting">Johannes Kersting (DE)</a> navigates the tension between abstraction and reality, between images of longing and depictions of the familiar in his paintings.

STRABAG ART Award 2025 - Haakon Neubert wins main prize
The STRABAG ART Award, one of Austria's most highly endowed private art prizes for painting and drawing, was presented for the 30th time. The main prize 2025 goes to the German artist <a href="https://galerie-drees.de/kuenstlerinnen/haakon-neubert">Haakon Neubert</a>. The jury, which included Angela Stief, Director of ALBERTINA modern, justified its decision by stating that Haakon's works impress with their graphic clarity, colorful monochrome surfaces, pop-cultural references and humorous observations of everyday life. In addition to the main prize, four recognition prizes were awarded. The award ceremony also marks the relaunch of the STRABAG Kunstforum under the new name STRABAG ART. 
 
Haakon Neubert, who was born in Münster in 1994, has always been interested in comics, video games and pop culture, and you can see this in his work: Bright colors, hard contours, monochrome surfaces and an emphasis on the graphic in the painterly. Full of humor, absurd and deeply anchored in the everyday, he depicts ordinary scenes with figures that are often preoccupied with themselves, for example while shopping, playing sports, playing, working or eating. Neubert captures his initial pictorial ideas in quick drawings that he cuts out and then assembles the cut-outs into small narrative scenes. His works are about being alone, being together and being strange, says the artist, who studied at the Kunstakademie Münster from 2016 - 2024. High and low art combine in these works and provide an unadulterated insight into a reality of life that is characterized by great immediacy.  (Angela Stief, Chief curator at the Albertina Modern) 
 
„I think that the formal and the content are mutually dependent and cannot be separated from each other. The interplay of both components forms the narrative. In my case, this means combining everyday scenes with my painting. I spent a long time thinking about why I paint until I realized that this was the wrong question. We are delighted that <a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/artists/hanna-nitsch">Hanna Nitsch</a> will be represented at this year's 91st Autumn Exhibition of the Kunstverein Hannover. Under the theme ‘Fictional Constructions: Threads of Work and Homecoming,’ various works from her extensive oeuvre will be presentated at the Kunstverein Hannover until October 26, 2025.
The 91st edition of the Herbstausstellung at Kunstverein Hannover, taking place in 2025 in collaboration with Städtische Galerie KUBUS, offers a compelling survey of current artistic production in the region. As one of the most established platforms for contemporary art in Northern Germany, the Herbstausstellung is widely regarded as a vital barometer of emerging artistic developments. Since its founding in the 19th century, Kunstverein Hannover has presented a series of recurring exhibitions—among them the Herbstausstellung, which has been held continuously since 1907 and remains a cornerstone of the institution’s program.

On 14 June 2025, Galerie Drees will participate in the Night of Museums in Hanover for the first time. 
 
During the Night of Museums, we will be showing the exhibition:
ALCHEMY 
SAMUEL SALCEDO – Sculpture 
MICHELLE CONCEPCIÓN – Painting
<a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/exhibitions/alchemy">ALCHEMY</a> has always referred to the phenomenon of transforming something ordinary into something extraordinary. In art, too, alchemical processes of searching and striving for transformation, for influencing and redefining processes play a major role. It is precisely this approach that connects the work of SAMUEL SALCEDO and MICHELLE CONCEPCIÓN. Salcedo, whose cast sculptures explore human heads and bodies, uses the materiality and influence of the casting process to reveal traces of transience and manifest inner sensitivities. Concepción constructs her auratic, sometimes large-format works like a scientific experiment in individual series of investigations. Using pigment and canvas, she attempts to reproduce processes that occur in nature and integrate them into her works.

‘UNESCO City of Music’ (UCOM): Nico Gutu - Richard Häckel Duo 
Moldovan accordionist Nico Gutu and saxophonist Richard Häckel have formed a special duo that uniquely combines various styles, including tango nuevo, jazz and European folklore. Both musicians are accomplished instrumentalists with a keen sense of improvisation and musical interplay. The duo focuses primarily on the artful interpretation of selected compositions. Their repertoire includes pieces by Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Jobim and John Coltrane, among others. Each composition opens up a whole new world of sound for the audience and invites listeners on an adventurous musical journey of discovery.

Peter Heber – »Über das Sterben« (About dying)
The Sprengel Museum is showing the 49-part series of drawings “Über das Sterben” from 20.05.2025.
In 2023, the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung acquired the 49-part series of drawings “Über das Sterben” by Peter Heber (*1956 Süderbrarup, lives in Hanover) for its collection, which is housed in the Sprengel Museum Hannover. The drawings, which were created within three days of visits to his aunt's deathbed in 1993, are part of a tradition of death scenes that artists such as Claude Monet, Ferdinand Hodler and Michael Morgner have dealt with intensively.
A booklet will be published in the series “Beiträge zur Sammlung”.

The line, the circle and the square are the elementary forms that can be found in Jürgen Paas' wall and floor works. Born in Krefeld and with a studio in Essen, he works with luminous bands of color made of plastic, which he winds into spirals or assembles into fields of lines. Hardly limited in size, he also creates huge floor objects several meters in diameter that become walk-in works of art. The change of perspective in the room constantly creates new visual experiences for visitors.

The department stores' giant Max Emden and the military industrialist Emil Bührle never met and yet they were connected. Both were passionate art collectors, and Bührle acquired high-calibre paintings by Claude Monet and Vincent van Gogh, among others, from the Emden collection. However, one collector was persecuted and expropriated by the National Socialists due to his Jewish origins, while the other became the richest Swiss and knowingly bought Nazi-looted art during the Second World War. Works from the Bührle Foundation ended up in the Kunsthaus Zürich that are to be categorised as Nazi-looted assets. The descendants of Max Emden have been fighting in vain for 16 years for a fair and just solution. 
Hubertus Butin studied art history, philosophy and modern history in Bonn and Zurich. From 1996 to 1998, he worked as an art history assistant in Gerhard Richter's studio in Cologne. Since 1991, he has published numerous essays and books on contemporary art, art theory and cultural policy. He also organises exhibitions at international museums as a guest curator. He also works as an expert worldwide for collectors, art dealers, auction houses and the state criminal investigation offices. Hubertus Butin lives and works in Berlin.
The event is being organised in cooperation with the Bildungsverein Hannover, QBK and the Forum für Politik und Kultur e.V.

St. George's Church in Wismar is an architectural jewel of historical architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In its monumental rooms, characterized by brick Gothic style, open up extraordinary opportunities to present contemporary art and place it in relation to history and space. 
Paul Schwer has placed two walk-in octagonal tubes there, which were originally modeled on the unbuilt elements of the Nord Stream project stored on the island of Rügen. Both tubes, one horizontal and one towering 6 meters high, were clad with colourfully painted acrylic glass panels and perforated metal sheets, making the outside and inside of the sculpture permeable. The artwork develops an immense tension with the impressive church interior - creating an intense relationship between sculptural art and sacred architecture.

The encounter between the paintings of the German artist Thomas Glas (*1964) and the sculptures of the Catalan artist <a href="https://galerie-drees.de/en/artists/samuel-salcedo">Samuel Salcedo</a> (*1975) in the Städtische Galerie Villa Streccius in Landau opens up new multi-perspective experiences across borders. The absolute painting of Thomas Glas penetrates far into the cosmic space of our imagination with its pictorial instruments. The primal elements of art, “lines and color potentials”, give rise to never-before-seen realities. The pictures bring to life people's longing for creation, the beginnings of our conception of the world and the limits of our experience. Samuel Salcedo addresses the sensitivities of human existence in a profound and poetic way. With their eyes closed, the steel faces appear powerfully focused on themselves. They remind us of the lostness of time and space.
Inside and outside, these works of art transcend the genre boundaries of art and become mirror surfaces of our real and imagined world. In themselves, they are seismographic instruments for remeasuring the world and, together, they condense into a magnificent cosmological resonance of our existence.

The author Julia Voss will give a lecture at Galerie Drees entitled »WHO CAME FIRST? The path to abstract painting«. 
The Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) is one of the greatest rediscoveries of the 21st century. Julia Voss has written a biography of the exceptional artist and in her lecture will take a look behind the scenes of af Klint's surprising comeback. 
Hilma af Klint was already creating huge non-figurative paintings in 1906, years before her male colleagues declared themselves the inventors of abstraction. Although she lived at almost the same time as Wassily Kandinsky, she remained almost unknown during her lifetime. Today, af Klint is celebrated in the world's great museums, from Düsseldorf to London and New York.

ART SALON ZÜRICH 2024

The 9th Swiss Sculpture Triennial will take place from May 4 to October 30, 2024 in Bad Ragaz (CH) and Vaduz (LI). 
Europe's largest open-air exhibition celebrates a success story lasting over 20 years. 
Every three years since 2000, artists from all over the world have been invited to the traditional spa town of Bad Ragaz to create large-scale sculptures in the town and its landscape. 
As in 2021, Samuel Salcodo from Spain has been invited to present his fascinating head sculptures in front of the stunning mountain landscape.

Samuel Salcedo at the 9th Swiss Sculpture Triennial

Hubertus Butin (art historian and author) will give a lecture on conceptual art at Gallery Drees on Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 7 p.m. with the title: "Live in your head - aspects of conceptual art of the 1960s and 1970s". 
Ulrich Krempel (art historian, curator and former museum director of the Sprengel Museum Hannover) will host the event.

HANNA NITSCH – WENN WIR DURCH FLURE GEHEN #1 
 
The Kunstverein Ludwigsburg's first exhibition in its anniversary year 2024 is entitled »WENN WIR DURCH FLURE GEHEN«. 
The "WE" in the title says it all, as the artist Hanna Nitsch has invited both the Berlin musician and sound artist Katharina Schmidt and her daughter Lilli to perform together in the rooms of the Kunstverein. The result is a cooperative project that deals with floating, fleetingness and transparency, farewells and departures, and remembering. Fragments create an imaginary transparency where the context of a story no longer exists. Three generations of women present fragments of these themes side by side in the exhibition. Ink drawings, photographs, texts and a sound installation created especially for the Kunstverein space can be seen and heard.
A cooperative artistic project with Hanna Nitsch, Katharina Schmidt and Lilli Nitsch.

The Kunstverein "Kunst und Kultur zu Hohenaschau e.V." shows from July 7 – August 6, 2023 a comprehensive retrospective of 51 works from the creative years from 1999 to today.

Samuel Salcedo is one of 200 artists selected to take part in NordArt 2023 at the Kunstwerk Carlshütte. It is the 24th showing of work by international artists in an area of over 100,000 square metres in and around the historical iron foundry in Schleswig-Holstein. NordArt is one of the largest annual exhibitions of contemporary art in Europe, and this year runs from 3 June to 8 October.
We are delighted the Samuel Salcedo is a part of this story.
It will be well worth a visit to rediscover his unique sculptured heads, whose portrayal of the human countenance is always both profound and humorous, in this remarkable atmosphere. Samuel Salcedo will be represented by 17 works, made of iron, polished aluminium and epoxy resin. The Carlshütte in Büdelsdorf is only 35 km from Kiel, and can eminently be combined with a journey north …

Samuel Salcedo auf der NordArt 2023

From 19.05. to 17.06. the Kunstverein Viernheim dedicates a multimedia solo exhibition to our gallery artist Hanna Nitsch. 
In MADONNA, MEDEA &amp; ICH #1 she deals primarily with the ambivalence of individual and collective identity, cultural role models and pictorial stereotypes.
Also shown in the public space is a multi-part photographic work that Hanna Nitsch developed especially for this purpose. On the six billboards distributed in Viernheim's urban space, VIERNHEIM_BILLBOARDS_MADONNA # she confronts the viewer with questions about contemporary motherhood between Maria and Medea, happiness and pain.

Markus Fräger – Retrospective in the Museum Schloss Cappenberg Kreis Unna

With his fictional landscape compositions, the Hungarian-German artist Szilard Huszank takes us to sceneries that are apparently idyllic and full of longing. Starting from a large repertoire of classical motifs, he transforms them into a play of colors and surfaces via his individual artistic language. The virtuosically designed works, which combine technical skill with content, are being shown for the first time at the Kunstverein Ludwigsburg.

Nothing influences us as much as the family. We associate it with love, support, trust – but also pain, disappointment and effort. Today, the definition of family is no longer clear: In addition to the typical middle-class family, a wide variety of forms of cohabitation are becoming established. 
What role does family background play in one’s own life concept? What influence do money, power and social role models have on family life? Can love and care also be constricting? What stories and secrets shape our relationship with relatives or friends?

JUST DO IT! – Is this a challenge to step outside your comfort zone? Or an alarming demand to do something out of the ordinary? HAAKON NEUBERT certainly steps out of his comfort zone – in his image worlds he goes onto the street, into corner pubs and where the atmosphere’s rough. He doesn’t make accusations; he captures moments. We become keen observers, readily drawn into his comic-trashy, high-contrast, colourful scenarios. Sculptures by the artist duo JULIA VENSKE &amp; GREGOR SPÄNLE are vivid proof that what apparently doesn’t go together can give us a glimpse behind the social façade. Classical white marble, that art-historical sculptural constant, oozes out of disposable packaging or gets jammed onto signboards. JUST DO IT! An invitation to take a closer look…

MACH DOCH!

HIDDEN SURFACE – the juxtaposition of work by SZILARD HUSZANK &amp; AJA VON LOEPER is a pointer to what lies beneath the surface, to layers of perception, memory and transformation. Szilard Huszank undertakes this exploration in vividly coloured, sometimes large-format fragments of landscape in thickly applied oils. His colouration exhibits a deep sensibility in the interplay of landscape painting and abstract poetry. Aja von Loeper’s works on paper, by contrast, are white, paper-white. Elevations and structures that come about through physically working the paper itself stand out in relief from the material’s smoothness and generate a tremendous, almost sculptural tension. Von Loeper brings structures to the surface, awakens the two-dimensional sheet of paper to three-dimensional vigour – face and depth – hidden surface.

HIDDEN SURFACE

The quote from Nietzsche’s Zarathustra describes the scepticism about the spoken word shared by many artists. With this exhibition we initiate a discussion between what an image shows and what the viewer discerns. In his object panels, Dirk Salz explores spaces of depth, reflection and time that emerge through the many-layered application of pigments and resins beneath a high-gloss seal. Not only in his artistic accomplishment does he seek an ideal ‘that is yet to be reached’. Lara Kaiser, another YOUNG TALENT in our gallery programme, blurs space and representation, figuration and abstraction in her small- and medium-format oil paintings that examine art-historical motifs, perception and illusion. Dirk Salz and Lara Kaiser both question the limits of the inexpressible.

IT IS A BEAUTIFUL FOLLY, SPEAKING

ALCHEMY has long denoted the transformation of something ordinary into something extraordinary. Alchemical processes of searching and striving for transformation, manipulation and redetermination also play a large role in art, and it is exactly this approach that connects the work of SAMUEL SALCEDO and MICHELLE CONCEPCIÓN. Salcedo, whose cast sculptures seek the essence of human heads and bodies, manipulates the casting process in its materiality in order to reveal traces of impermanence and manifest states of mind. Concepción builds up her auratic, sometimes large-format works like the individual stages of a scientific experiment. Using pigment and canvas she attempts to reproduce natural processes and to integrate them into her paintings.

ALCHEMY

PAINTING IS NO PROBLEM – this bold assertion, and the title of a work by 
Eberhard Ross, inevitably raises the question ‘What is painting?’ 
‘Painting is an artform that involves the application of paint onto 
a surface such as paper, canvas or wood’, says the dictionary. 
The three artists EBERHARD ROSS, PAUL DIESTEL and SANDER REIJGERS 
deal very differently with this artform. Ross, in his mysteriously luminous paintings 
with their fine chromatic gradations and delicately lineated surfaces, 
is interested in the impact of colour. Diestel paints his nature-inspired sculptures 
so as to heighten their expressive power, while Reijgers conceives painting as the 
expression of a fascination with the materiality of paint and the physical 
act of its application.

OCTOPUS’S GARDEN – this famous song title from the Beatles evokes sounds in us and immediately stimulates the imagination. Exactly what happens on looking at the works of Sun-Rae Kim, which carry us off to a magical, mysterious, narrative, micro-fantasy cosmos. The South Korean-born artist moves with artistic virtuosity through the Asian and European worlds, combining them with fascinating playfulness, vividness and technical ability. In her new series too she transforms familiar everyday material into ornate objects or small picture panels. With enigmatic underwater creatures or utopian fantasy worlds, Sun-Rae Kim plays with our sensory perception …

Is this what we associate, what we sense, when we take in Johannes Kersting’s images? The light, the gentleness, the atmospheres that Kersting elaborates on canvas and paper leave us with a resounding calm. Kersting, who also trained as a photographer, is a master of the art of lighting in his scenarios, and not by chance do his image worlds recall the paintings of Edward Hopper. Do we long for these places too?

Update #Summer

Leave-taking, departure, suspension, elusiveness, transparency and again and again recollection – in her exhibition »Wandering through Corridors #2« Hanna Nitsch places unusually delicate ink drawings of fragmentary faces beside powerful photographs in order to examine this very difference. The photographs document the dialogue between the artist and her daughter in everyday images. All these fragmentary insights create an imaginary transparency, a kind of ‘interface’, through which interior and exterior, light and shadow, time and place can connect into a possible whole. The site-specific exhibition is accompanied by a sound installation by the Berlin audio artist Katharina Schmidt.

WENN WIR DURCH FLURE GEHEN #2

Constructed scenes, melancholy landscapes, architectural images as the reflections of hopeful utopia – we show three artists who are preoccupied with the creative drive of civilised society. They illustrate, reduce, stage. The paintings by our gallery artist Thomas Dillmann and the works of Jens Hausmann are suffused with strong contrasts of light and shadow, while the photographs by the young graduate Max van Dorsten contain a mysterious tension. The images are charged with what can’t be seen – similarly to the SUSPENCE of a Hitchcock film …

It is often said that ‘less is more’. In our overstimulated world the works by these six artists are havens of undisturbed sensory experience. The exhibition shows positions that combine a geometric-technical compositional principle with colour fields, lines and clear basic forms. This art is concrete and constructive. A fine distincition is revealed between the further development and minimisation of theoretical boundaries. The versatility of the apparent strictness, and the wealth of approaches, materials and image carriers, is presented in oil paintings by Daniel Behrendt (DE) and Sander Reijgers (NL), wall objects by Mikael Fagerlund (SE) and Jürgen Paas (DE), sculptures by Julia Mangold (US) and image-objects by Dirk Salz (DE).

What do Hans Aichinger, Matthias Kanter and Gerard Mas have in common? It’s their fascination with composition, light distribution, fall of fabric and coloration in the way of the old masters, which they translate into the here and now. Their subversive interventions play with the hollow concept of a historically situated cultural appropriation, opening doors to new interpretations. Aichinger captures his protagonists on canvas by means of exact stage directions and moody, dramatic lighting. Kanter’s abstractions relate to the composition and coloration of the Renaissance and Baroque. Mas translates old-master portraits into majestic sculptural figures and mischievously transfers them to the present day through the addition of ironic accessories. The artists’ reference to the Renaissance and Baroque is especially noticeable …

WHO IS WHO IS WHO

Coexist − Local Global − in this sixth part of her continuing Coexist series, Franziska Stünkel guides us from the urban space emptied by the pandemic to the revitalised big cities. In 2021 and 2022 she photographed in Germany at first, then in Europe, America and Australia. Her recent reflections of our variously interconnected societies show us people in increasingly digital environments and a domesticated natural world, surrounded by complexity. Tension-charged and calm, multicoloured and withdrawn, moving and melancholy − Franziska Stünkel’s photographs turn a many-faceted gaze onto up-to-the-minute questions of global coexistence.

DIE WAT SPAART, DIE WAT HEEFT – Gallery artist <a href="https://galerie-robert-drees.de/en/kuenstler/eric-butcher/">Eric Butcher</a> developed the idea for the new exhibition. His mother, grewing up during the war and was marked by constant scarcity, carried this Dutch proverb into the family. All artists exhibit an economy or frugality of which my mother would approve and which ironically seems to capture something of the spirit of our times. A concern for the environment, a desire to step more lightly on the planet, or a preoccupation – for various reasons – with objects with histories, the drivers for their creative strategies are multifarious.
The eight international artists in the group exhibition have developed innovative and artistically fruitful approaches to the concepts of “reduction”, “reuse” and “recycling” and implemented them in painting, installation and sculpture.

DIE WAT SPAART, DIE WAT HEEFT

FOLLOW THE LINE – everything proceeds from the line, the common thread of the new exhibition, presented in the expressive forms of sculpture, painting and drawing. This international show with the Dutch sculptor <a href="https://galerie-robert-drees.de/en/kuenstler/pieter-obels/">Pieter Obels</a>, the Berlin-based painter American <a href="https://galerie-robert-drees.de/en/gastkuenstler/benjamin-rubloff/">Benjamin Rubloff</a> and the Venezuelan graphic artist <a href="https://galerie-robert-drees.de/en/gastkuenstler/maribel-mas/">Maribel Mas</a>, now resident in Leipzig, shows how impressive, varied and compelling the compositional element of the line can be in the artistic process. 
The exhibition shows the very varying characteristics of the ‘object of artistic examination’ in Pieter Obels’ steel sculptures, Benjamin Rubloff’s graffiti paintings or Maribel Mas’s pen-and-ink drawings. Now robust and vibrant, now strong and direct, now light and delicate. 
The uniqueness of the artistic handwriting is characterised by the form and configuration of the line, which crucially influences the emotional impression that the work sparks in the viewer.
Pieter Obels, Benjamin Rubloff and Maribel Mas will attend the opening.
